Distinguishing nanowire and nanotube formation by the deposition current transients

    Get PDF
AbstractHigh aspect ratio Ni nanowires (NWs) and nanotubes (NTs) were electrodeposited inside ordered arrays of self-assembled pores (approximately 50 nm in diameter and approximately 50 μm in length) in anodic alumina templates by a potentiostatic method. The current transients monitored during each process allowed us to distinguish between NW and NT formation. The depositions were long enough for the deposited metal to reach the top of the template and form a continuous Ni film. The overfilling process was found to occur in two steps when depositing NWs and in a single step in the case of NTs. A comparative study of the morphological, structural, and magnetic properties of the Ni NWs and NTs was performed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometry, respectively.M. OCT angiography: a technique for the assessment of retinal and optic nerve diseases in the pediatric population

    Get PDF
Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) is a novel, rapidly evolving, non-invasive imaging technique that allows images of the retinal vasculature to be obtained in a few seconds. Blood vessels of different retinal vascular plexuses and the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) can be examined without the administration of any contrast or dye. Due to these characteristics, OCT-A could be an excellent complementary test to study retinal vascularization in children. Until now, most of the studies with OCT-A have been conducted in adults and only a few have been carried out in children. In this review, we describe the principles and advantages of OCT-A over traditional imaging methods and provide a summary of the OCT-A findings in retinopathy of prematurity and other retinal and optic disc pathologies in children. In view of the promising results from studies, the advantages of a relatively rapid and non-invasive method to assess the retinal vasculature makes OCT-A a tool of which applications in the field of pediatric ophthalmology will be expanded in the near future for patient diagnosis and follow-up in every day clinical practice

Comparison between the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised and the Comprehensive Assessment of Psychopathic Personality in a representative sample of Spanish prison inmates

In the field of psychopathy, there is an ongoing debate about the core traits that define the disorder, and that therefore must be present to some extent in all psychopaths. The main controversy of this debate concerns criminal behaviour, as some researchers consider it a defining trait, while others disagree. Using a representative sample of 204 Spanish convicted inmates incarcerated at the Pereiro de Aguiar Penitentiary in Ourense, Spain, we tested two competing models, the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), which includes criminal behaviour items, versus the Comprehensive Assessment of Psychopathic Personality (CAPP), which does not. We used two different PCL-R models, one that includes criminal items and another that does not. PCL-R factors, facets, and testlets from both models and CAPP dimensions were correlated and compared. Two different PCL-R cut-off scores, 25 or more and 30 or more, were used for the analysis. Overall, a strong correlation was found between PCL-R and CAPP scores in the whole sample, but as scores increased and inmates became more psychopathic, the correlations weakened. All these data indicate that psychopathy, understood to mean having high scores on the PCL-R and CAPP, is a multidimensional entity, and inmates can develop the disorder and then receive the diagnosis through different dimensions. The CAPP domains showed better correlations when compared with the PCL-R factors from both models, showing that an instrument for the assessment of psychopathy without a criminal dimension is valuable for clinical assessment and research purposes.publishedVersio

Clinician ratings of the Comprehensive Assessment of Psychopathic Personality (CAPP) in a representative sample of Spanish prison inmates: New validity evidence

    Get PDF
The Comprehensive Assessment of Psychopathic Personality (CAPP) is a concept map of psychopathic personality disorder (PPD). The CAPP- Institutional Rating Scale (IRS) is a tool designed to assess CAPP symptoms in institutional settings. The CAPP contains 33 personality traits organized in six domains: attachment, behavioural, cognitive, dominance, emotional and self. Until now, much of the CAPP research has been conducted out of clinical, forensic and correctional settings using self-ratings. In the current study, the psychometric properties and construct validity of the CAPP-IRS were evaluated in a non-convenience sample of 204 Spanish convicts. Clinician ratings were employed. Participants had been imprisoned for at least 6 months at Pereiro de Aguiar Penitentiary. This group of inmates was heterogeneous with respect to type of official charges, and representative as all convicts interned for at least 6 months in this prison were screened for participation. Classical test theory indexes of reliability, correlations between CAPP items and domains and external correlations and structural analyses demonstrated that CAPP assessment is a solid and robust way of evaluating psychopathy in a correctional setting. Best fit was found for a three-factor model: attachment and emotional items associated with a callous and unemotional trait, dominance and self items associated with a pathological interpersonal style, and behavioural and residual items from other domains associated with impulsivity

Dielectric characterization of multiferroic magnetoelectric double-perovskite Y(Ni0.5Mn0.5)O3 thin films

We report on functional properties of Y(Ni0.5Mn0.5)O3 epitaxial thin films, growth by pulsed laser deposition, observing clear features of its ferroelectric and ferromagnetic nature at cryogenic temperature. Temperature-dependent complex impedance spectroscopy (IS) characterization has shown a dielectric anomaly around the ferromagnetic Curie temperature ( 100 K) indicative of coupling between magnetic and electric orders

MED15 prion-like domain forms a coiled-coil responsible for its amyloid conversion and propagation

Altres ajuts: "la Caixa" Foundation i ICREA-Academia 2016A disordered to β-sheet transition was thought to drive the functional switch of Q/N-rich prions, similar to pathogenic amyloids. However, recent evidence indicates a critical role for coiled-coil (CC) regions within yeast prion domains in amyloid formation. We show that many human prion-like domains (PrLDs) contain CC regions that overlap with polyQ tracts. Most of the proteins bearing these domains are transcriptional coactivators, including the Mediator complex subunit 15 (MED15) involved in bridging enhancers and promoters. We demonstrate that the human MED15-PrLD forms homodimers in solution sustained by CC interactions and that it is this CC fold that mediates the transition towards a β-sheet amyloid state, its chemical or genetic disruption abolishing aggregation. As in functional yeast prions, a GFP globular domain adjacent to MED15-PrLD retains its structural integrity in the amyloid state. Expression of MED15-PrLD in human cells promotes the formation of cytoplasmic and perinuclear inclusions, kidnapping endogenous full-length MED15 to these aggregates in a prion-like manner. The prion-like properties of MED15 are conserved, suggesting novel mechanisms for the function and malfunction of this transcription coactivator

Inter-speaker speech variability assessment using statistical deformable models from 3.0 Tesla magnetic resonance images

    Get PDF
The morphological and dynamic characterisation of the vocal tract during speech production has been gaining greater attention due to the motivation of the latest improvements in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging; namely, with the use of higher magnetic fields, such as 3.0 Tesla. In this work, the automatic study of the vocal tract from 3.0 Tesla MR images was assessed through the application of statistical deformable models. Therefore, the primary goal focused on the analysis of the shape of the vocal tract during the articulation of European Portuguese sounds, followed by the evaluation of the results concerning the automatic segmentation, i.e. identification of the vocal tract in new MR images. In what concerns speech production, this is the first attempt to automatically characterise and reconstruct the vocal tract shape of 3.0 Tesla MR images by using deformable models; particularly, by using active and appearance shape models. The achieved results clearly evidence the adequacy and advantage of the automatic analysis of the 3.0 Tesla MR images of these deformable models in order to extract the vocal tract shape and assess the involved articulatory movements. These achievements are mostly required, for example, for a better knowledge of speech production, mainly of patients suffering from articulatory disorders, and to build enhanced speech synthesizer models.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Speech articulation assessment using dynamic magnetic resonance imaging techniques

    Get PDF
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has been successfully applied on real-time analysis of the articulators during speech production along the whole vocal tract, with good signal-to-noise ratio and without ionizing effects. Because speech dynamic events need a minimal sampling rate, an improvement on the temporal resolution of MRI systems is demanded. Our aim is to describe a dynamic MRI technique to acquire and assess the main articulatory events during the production of some European Portuguese utterances. Hence, novel perceptions for dynamic MRI technique using a 3.0 Tesla System are presented in order to study the shape of the vocal tract during speech production
